He wanted to build a block of houses inspired by that look in Rolling Hills. Hanson couldn’t get the look of pre-Revolutionary War Georgian cottages in Williamsburg, Virginia, out of his mind. Hanson enlisted Williams for another South Bay project after returning from an East Coast trip with Palos Verdes Peninsula landowner Frank Vanderlip in 1938. He designed his first South Bay dwelling in 1921, the Matteson house, on Manhattan Avenue, in Hermosa Beach. Barron Hilton later moved into a house Williams designed for an earlier owner that became familiar to TV viewers when it was used as the “Dynasty” house where the Carrington family lived. He designed many celebrity homes, including those of Lon Chaney, Bert Lahr, Barbara Stanwyck, Tyrone Power and, later, Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball. Much of his early work centered on residential buildings. ![]() ![]() In 1923, he became the first African American member of AIA. Austin, before establishing his own firm one year later. He began working as a professional architect in 1921 for John S. 3 Williamsburg Lane, one of 13 Williams-designed houses in Rolling Hills. He married his wife, Della Mae, in 1917, and they settled in the Adams District. He graduated from USC in 1914 while still a student there, he helped design several new campus buildings. His father died when he was 2, and his mother when he was 4, both from tuberculosis. Williams was born in the West Adams district of Los Angeles on Feb. His South Bay projects include the Reynolds house in Malaga Cove, a distinctive block of homes behind the gates in Rolling Hills and the SeaView Palos Verdes housing development in Rancho Palos Verdes. (Credit: Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection) He’s best known for designing homes for the rich and famous, and for major Southern California buildings such as the Los Angeles County Courthouse, the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, and the Arrowhead Springs Hotel north of San Bernardino. He designed more than 2,000 buildings during his long, fruitful career, eight of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sam Gnerreīut then, Williams spent a lifetime as a pioneer in his field. The posthumous award marked the first time an African American architect had been so recognized. ![]() The American Institute of Architects bestowed its highest honor, the Gold Medal, on Paul Revere Williams in December 2017. ![]()
